    Global benchmarks track the big picture: the FAO Food Price Index averaged 136.0 points in September 2026, up 5.8% on a year earlier (FAO, October 2026). But most food is sold through private deals, in hundreds of grades and pack sizes, with no public price. Data that does exist is patchy, uses different units and currencies, and arrives late. Without AI, building a reliable price for "medjool dates, large, 5 kg cartons, delivered to Kuala Lumpur" is close to impossible.

    Can the index be manipulated by fake trades?
